CSSE vs SET: The Essex 11+ Explained
By Mr Dominic G · 12 September 2025 · 1 min read
The Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex (CSSE) administers a joint test used by KEGS, CCHS, CRGS and CCHSG. The Southend group uses the SET. Most families sit both to maximise options.
The CSSE Maths paper is 60 minutes, 50 marks, with a mix of short and extended-answer questions. It rewards working shown and partial credit. SET is multiple-choice and timed more aggressively per question.
If your target schools include both consortiums, plan for two distinct exam techniques: methodical layout for CSSE, rapid elimination for SET.
